Why going natural is about more than just hair!

01/09/2017

Every woman uses their hair to define who they are; whether it be spunky, fierce or calm. Nevertheless, the decision to go natural is contemplated on so many levels. Maybe its because you possess no need for a relaxer, or maybe its because you want to get in touch with your inner roots. In any case, it is a journey. One in which you learn more about yourself, than you could ever imagine.

The conscious effort it takes to love your naturally curly, kinky hair should be duly noted. Check. But what does it mean to be a natural woman? What it means will vary from melanin to melanin. It will, however, be as much of a process for you, as it would any woman. Its not just about ridding yourself of the old and embracing the new, no more than it is about changing the way you look. It is about embarking on a nappy headed adventure, and enjoying the ride along.

Often, we neglect the fact that our hair is more than something we grow from our heads. It defines us, establishes us, and creates us. It paints a picture for the world to see. Being natural means that you are willing to accept that your hair may be unconventional, disliked, and socially inappropriate. It means you are comfortable with what God gave you. It means you donot style for vanity or vain, but for individuality.

The journey of the natural hair process teaches one discipline, patience, and self love. From calmy waiting or your twist out to dry, down to accepting the fluff you get from a wash-n-go, being natural isnt always a walk in the park. Some days will be bad hair days, some days your curls will flourish to the high heavens, and some days you wont feel like even detangling the mess of naps attached to your scalp. In any case, embrace it. Its not just about hair. Its about being who you are, both nappy and happy.
